Open source is an operating decision, not a moral position

A growing SaaS company often reaches for commercial software because it is the fastest apparent way to fill a capability gap. That can be reasonable. It can also turn a temporary convenience into recurring cost, shallow customization, fragmented data, and a dependency no one fully understands.

The real decision

Open source is not automatically the right answer, and commercial software is not automatically a mistake. The engineering question is whether the business can control the data, integrate the system safely, operate it competently, and change it when requirements change.

Production is where the work begins

Selecting an open-source package is only the first decision. Production work includes identity, access controls, update practice, backups, observability, integrations, customization, data governance, and a clear operator path when something fails.

That is why a software catalog is not an implementation strategy. The value is in choosing the right foundation and making it dependable under the actual constraints of the company.
